Grandpa's Face
Published in School & Library Binding by Philomel Books (November, 1988)
Authors: Eloise Greenfield and Floyd Cooper
Average review score:

Outstanding Storytelling for Children
This is a very poignant tale of which all children can relate.

Tamika appears to be around six years of age. That is a time when children are so impressionable. That which is trivial to an adult is of great importance to child; therefore, the story has a relevancy for all who care about and deal with children.

Tamika reminds me so much of my niece who really adores her grandfather, my dad. As I turned the pages, reading the text and admiring the beautiful illustrations, I could only imagine how my niece would react to the unfolding events. This is a sign that the book can have meaning for all.

Miss Greenfield has used clear vocabulary that successfully tells her story to the young reader.

The book comes highly recommended!

Graphic Design in the Mechanical Age: Selections from the Merrill C. Berman Collection
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (1998)
Authors: Deborah Rothschild, Ellen Lupton, Darra Goldstein, Williams College Museum of Art, and Cooper-Hewitt Museum
Average review score:

Greatest Time of Design!
this book is a real find! there are some truly magnificent and stylistically ground-breaking samples of early 20th century graphic design here. most of the selections represent the pinnacle of the german and russian avante-garde designers of the 1920's and 30's, including alexandr rodchenko, el lissitsky, lazlo-moholy nagy and many others. But there is also a decent overview of french and american designers as well.

this period of work is profound because of it's ingenuity, daring graphic experiments in text and layout, and it's use of collage, photos and text, and dada influences to create bold graphic statements. the pieces included in this volume span many different media in the graphic arts...war propaganda, art exhibition posters, product advertising, civil program posters, packaging, publishing, and even fine art.
it is a testament to this collection of designers, because many of them worked simultaniously in many different mediums all at once, especially those involved in the bauhaus movement and the russian avante-garde artists.

this book is an excellent overview of this period in graphic design, and would provide endless inspiration for anybody involved in any field of design. i cannot recommend it strongly enough!

The Great Cooper River Bridge
Published in Hardcover by University of South Carolina Press (December, 2002)
Authors: Jason Annan and Pamela Gabriel
Average review score:

A great combination of scholarship and entertainment!
An erudite yet entertaining account of early 20th Century Charleston and the construction of its bridge to the North. An unusual mix of engineering, history, and social commentary. Great old photos and drawings of old Charleston. Written with the charm and grace befitting one of America's greatest historic Old South towns.

Reads like a novel--terrific!!
This book is a must for anyone who loves Charleston, SC, and wants to know how this Holy City grew into the gem she is today. The story centers around the city's ancient bridge but really tells the history of Charleston in the early twentieth century. The authors have done an excellent job spinning history with personal vignettes and memories from older Charlestonians. The quirkiness of old Charleston shines through. I read the entire work in one afternoon and at times forgot that I was reading a history--it felt more like a novel.

Great Pyramid
Published in Hardcover by Troll Assoc (October, 1998)
Author: Cooper
Average review score:

An Egyptologist in the Making!
I must admit that I have thoroughly enjoyed The Great Pyramid and have learned as much from it as my six-year-old son. The book is about how the Great Pyramid of king Khofu must have been made and about the journey of his mummy, who it was bulit to entomb. Pages are full of pop-up three dimensional images of the Great Pyramid, illustrating various ways the stone must have been transported to the site and carried to the top of the pyramid. It provides hours of interactive historic information to your child in a very creative fashion. The information is engaging and precise--just right for the young minds with a short attention span to capture and retain. It works like magic. Find a secret treasure; pull the tab to learn a fact about various techniques used in the ancient Egyptian times; flip over an Egyptian god and find out what he is known for; unfold a sarcophagus and discover the process of mummification. There is no end to the fun and discovery provided by this highly recommended book; which makes it great for travelling as well. You never know: you might get an Egyptlologist in the making.

Growing Up Plain Among Conservative Wilburite Quakers: The Journey of a Public Friend
Published in Paperback by Friends United Press (December, 1999)
Author: Wilmer A. Cooper
Average review score:

An excellent insider's account of Conservative Quakerism
In a rare display of the ability to bridge two worlds that are so strikingly different, Mr. Cooper has the gift of being able to invite the reader into the world of Conservative Quakerism, without making him feel as if he has just been preached to. Mr. Cooper is quite unusual in that he seems to be able to appreciate (and therefore communicate with) both worlds, both the modern secular world we find ourselves in today, and also the rarified (but perhaps just as valid) world of Conservative Quakerism which is apparently structured around a belief that the ideals of "simplicity" and the "peace of the indwelling spirit" are still two very real and attainable virtues and are not merely two more sad casualties along the side of our modern information superhighway.

Happy Birthday Dr King (Multicultural Celebrations)

Acurate Portrait of a Legend
I read this book to my kindergartners and they fell in love with Dr. King. I saw the boys deeply engrossed in the story almost imagining themselves in Dr. King's position. I doubt they had ever heard of an African American man, in their young lives, who had such an enormous effect on the lives of people. They understood that Dr. King was a powerful man and the only person they could equate his power to was George Bush. I think they will forever remember the accomplishments of Dr. King because of the engaging way this author presented his life. At the mention of Dr. King's name my students say, "he's the greatest."
